Family photos are more than just pictures—they’re a way to keep your family’s story alive. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
As a photographer, I often get asked why family photos are so important. For me, the answer is personal. I have just one family photo from my childhood, taken when I was about 5 or 6 years old. Now that both my parents are gone, that single image means the world to me. I find myself wishing I had more—more moments, more memories, more pieces of my family’s story captured and preserved.
When clients come to me for a family session, many of them are surprised by how enjoyable the experience can be. They didn’t realize that a photo session could be fun, laid-back, and filled with snuggles, laughter, and genuine moments. I use a mix of prompts, jokes, and gentle guidance to get everyone comfortable, starting with a few posed shots and then letting the family take the lead.
For families with smaller children, the session is even more relaxed. I follow their moods, letting them take a moment to check out a frog or pick a flower if that’s what they need. We aren’t watching the clock; instead, we’re looking for what feels right, what truly captures the essence of your family.
A common misconception I hear is that no one will cooperate during a family photo session. But that’s where the magic of letting the kids “lead” comes in. By allowing them to explore and be themselves, and by using a few well-timed jokes, we create a relaxed atmosphere where everyone can just be who they are. The result? Photos that feel real, not forced.
I always encourage families to schedule a consultation with me before booking a session. It’s an opportunity to meet, see some samples, and break the ice. I’m not a fan of meeting right before the photoshoot; I’d much rather plan the session together, suggest clothing that matches the location you choose, and make sure we’re all on the same page. If we vibe, you can secure your spot on my calendar, and we’ll be ready to create something beautiful.
Once the session is over, families have the option to purchase digitals, wall art, or heirloom albums to keep their memories alive. These aren’t just photos; they’re pieces of your family’s history, preserved for future generations. There’s something incredibly powerful about displaying family photos in your home. It gives your kids confidence and a sense of connection as they grow up, seeing themselves as an important part of your family’s story.
While Christmas is a popular time for family photos, I don't recommend waiting for the holiday. Not only is it a busy time, but if you always go with a Christmas theme, your photos can seem out of place displayed year-round. Instead, pick a simple evening when your family can focus on each other and not the season. After all, any time is the perfect time to capture your family’s connection.
